Mengenal Positive Leadership

dv811025Positive leadership (PL) adalah sebuah pendekatan kepemimpinan yang menerapkan prinsip-prinsip positive organisational scholarship (POS). POS adalah sebuah cabang ilmu perilaku keorganisasian yang berbasiskan ilmu psikologi positif, dan berkembang pesat sejak sekitar 8-9 tahun terakhir di negara-negara maju. Selain karena majunya ilmu psikologi positif, perkembangan ini terutama juga karena banyaknya inisiasi kreatif dan hebat dari para pakar POS di Center for Positive Organization , Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Amerika.

Selaras dengan POS, positive leadership juga mengacu pada tiga orientasi (Cameron, 2007).

  1. Berfokus pada ?Positive Deviance, yakni kinerja yang unggul secara positif melebihi ukuran normal.
  2. Berorientasi pada kekuatan, bukan pada kelemahan; optimisme ketimbang pesimisme, dan supportif ketimbang kritis. Hal ini diistilahkan sebagai ?affirmative bias?.
  3. Berfokus pada keutamaan2 manusia, atau kondisi terbaik dari karyawan di organisasi. Orientasi in berasumsi bahwa pada dasarnya manusia adalah makhluk yang secara inheren sudah baik. Sederhananya, kita semua ?dari sono? nya sebenarnya merupakan orang-orang yang baik.

Dengan ketiga prinsip ini, Cameron (2007) mengusulkan 4 strategi utama dalam menjalankan positive leadership:

  1. Membangun iklim positif (positive climate)
  2. Membangun hubungan-hubungan yang positif (positive relationship)
  3. Membangun makna-makna positif (positive meaning)
  4. Membangun komunikasi-komunikasi yang positif (positive communication)

Melalui keempat strategi positive leadership ini, maka diharapkan individu dan organisasi akan memberikan penekanan yang lebih pada hal-hal yang memajukan mereka dan organisasinya, selain pada tantangan2 yang dihadapi; pada hal-hal yang baik, selain hal-hal yang buruk; pada pengalaman-pengalaman baik dan hebat, selain pada kesalahan-kesalahan, dan juga pada hal yang luar biasa (extraordinary), bukan sekadar yang biasa atau efektif saja.
